-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two years since their last album release, pop's most enduring super-group, Westlife finally emerge from the studio. The release of Where We Are was heralded by the single “What About Now” produced by long term collaborator Steve Robson and the first taster of the band's brand new sound.

Although instantly recognisable as a Westlife classic, complete with soaring melodies and rousing lyrics, the track injects an undeniably fresh. Says Westlife's Mark Feehily, “We wanted the first single from our new album to be somewhere between the Westlife sound our fans know and love, and the new direction we're heading in.

“We've been experimenting with a fresh vibe on this record, after eleven years we see this as phase two of the Westlife story.”

Spending much of 2009 hidden away in studios across Europe and the US, Westlife have been quietly creating their most exciting album to date. Working with pop's finest craftsmen, including Grammy nominated Ryan Tedder (Leona Lewis “Bleeding Love”, Beyonce “Halo”) as well as Steve Robson (James Morrison, Take That) the band has emerged with a collection of contemporary tunes, poised to surprise even the most ardent critic.

These stellar production teams have helped the boys create a new and contemporary sound, whilst retaining those classic Westlife soaring melodies and rousing lyrics. Perhaps best showcasing this new sound is “Shadows”, co-written by Backstreet Boy A. J. Mclean - a classic Westlife choral anthem, peppered with a futuristic military drum roll fashioned by urban-pop maestro Ryan Tedder the song sets the benchmark for the sound which brings Westlife bang up-to-date on the eve of the new decade.

Elsewhere “The Difference” visits rockier terrain, while “Another World” allows Mark Feehily's exquisite vocal to escalate to gospel territory, a moment sure to thrill live. "I'll See You Again” laments the passing of a loved one, set to a haunting landscape of piano, synths and acoustic guitar, a moment surely relatable.

The band's Shane Filan says "We've been experimenting with a fresh vibe on this record, working with new producers and writing songs for the album ourselves. After eleven years we see this as phase two of the Westlife story.”

Westlife's new material is the first since 2007's Back Home, which became the band's seventh number one album, spending two months in the Top Ten and selling over 1 million copies in the UK alone. No pop band can compare to Westlife's extraordinary success. During their 11 years at the top of pop's hierarchy, the band has sold over 40 million records globally.

In the UK alone they have scored nine multi-platinum albums and a record breaking 14 No.1 hits (behind only Elvis and The Beatles). They have also picked up innumerable awards and appeared on hundreds of magazine covers around the world.

Westlife is the only recording artists to win the prestigious 'Record Of The Year' an incredible four times (other top awards include two BRITS and an MTV Europe Award). Westlife are also the biggest selling Arena act ever, holding the record for the most concerts held at Wembley Arena, an incredible 23.

MARK'S FACEBOOK STALKER TERROR - WESTLIFE STAR THREATENED

WESTLIFE star Mark Feehily (29) is being terrorised by a Facebook stalker who has been bombarding him with threats and creepy messages.

The Sligo singer grew so alarmed he was forced to close his page, which he uses to keep in touch with dozens of his friends.

Creeped-out Mark told his mates he had been left unnerved after being targeted by the weirdo who was demanding personal meetings and threatening him.

A source close to the star revealed: "The messages started innocently enough but over the last few months this person has been sending lots of threats.

"They were literally sending dozens of messages every day demanding that he meets him and threatening to do crazy things.

"Mark was polite to begin with but the guy just kept sending these weird chilling messages saying he had been watching him and knew everywhere he had been.

"It would freak anyone out and he tried to get the person deselected as a friend on the site. But he kept getting back on under different names and the problem would begin all over again."

The singer was even more alarmed when the individual began sending explicit pictures of himself with cryptic messages.

The source said: "He just said enough is enough and he was forced to close his page down. It was the only way to deal with it.

"Mark was gutted because he kept in touch with loads of his old friends from Sligo on Facebook and it was great for him to see how people were getting on when he was on the road.

"Now he just uses his Twitter page and leaves it at that. He's not planning to re-launch his Facebook page any time soon."

Mark even used his Twitter to announce news of his engagement to boyfriend Kevin McDaid last month.

He told the Irish Daily Mirror last week: "I'm on Twitter all the time - I'm totally addicted to it."

 BOYZ WILL GO WEST

BOYZONE want to record an album with fellow boyband Westlife to show Irish solidarity.

The two groups, who were created by X Factor judge Louis Walsh, recorded an ITV1 tribute to late Boyzone member Stephen Gately earlier this week in London.

Steo's bandmate Shane Lynch said: "I can't believe that it's taken us 12 years to perform together.

"I'd love to record an album with Westlife and I've told them that.

"It would be nice to do it for charity. US artists like Jay-Z and Rihanna stick together and I think that we should be more like that too."

HELPLINE SHOCKED AT SURGE IN CALLS FROM CHILDREN / WESTLIFE FIRST EVER
 AMBASSADORS CHILDLINE

The service had 11% more calls from children suffering abuse or other harm last year an increase that contributed to a shocking 25% rise in the overall number of calls made.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was "astounded" by the increases that brought the total number of calls to its service to 815,708.

Childline manager Lloyd Byrne said the volume of calls raised questions about why children felt so disenfranchised that they had to ring a voluntary listening service to have someone to talk to. "It's hard to picture 800,000 calls but you would be familiar with what Croke Park would be like full to capacity on All-Ireland final day. Now picture that scene multiplied by 10," he said.

Most of the calls answered (63%) related to everyday issues which caused anxiety or confusion but 13%, one in eight, revealed more serious abuse or welfare issues.

That figure was up 11% on 2008, a jump linked to the growing financial strains in families affected by unemployment and debt.

Some 80% of those calls were made by children at night and the organisation said it showed a need for a state-provided out of hours social worker service.

It noted Government promises to boost the number of social workers but said it was essential those promises be honoured.

Director of services, Caroline O'Sullivan, said: "The commitment has been written down but it's one thing to have it written down in a report sitting up on a shelf. We want them to act on it. This is too serious to let go."

Other calls related to sexuality (11%), peer and family relationships (7%) and requests for information (6%) but more than 300,000 calls 37% of the total could not be answered.

The service, which costs more than 4 million a year to run, receives no Government funding so Childline relies on donations to provide the 5 it takes to answer every single call.

Top-selling band Westlife gave the service a boost yesterday by becoming the first ever ambassadors for Childline. The band, who already support a fundraising concert each year, will lend their name to promotional activities for the service.

lDonations can be made by calling 1800 504050 or log on to ispcc.ie/donate.

lChildline can be contacted free on 1800 666666, visit childline.ie, text "list" to 50101 for information on services, or text "talk" to 50101 to chat to a volunteer by text message.

BOYZONE WANT TO RECORD ALBUM WITH WESTLIFE

BOYZONE want to record an album with Westlife to show Irish solidarity.

Both manbands were created by X Factor judge Louis Walsh, 57, but they’ve never performed together until this week.

On Monday they recorded an ITV1 tribute to the late Boyzone member Stephen Gately, which is due to air on March 21.

I caught up with BZ afterwards where Shane Lynch, 33, told me: “I can’t believe that it’s taken us 12 years to perform together. I’d love to record an album with Westlife and I’ve told them that.

“It would be nice to do it for charity. American artists like Jay-Z and Rihanna stick together and I think that we should be more like that too.”

Filming was emotional for Shane, Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, 37 and Keith Duffy, 35, who were singing their hits for the first time without Steo.

Ronan, 32, admitted: “I’m so glad that’s over. I felt so drained and I don’t know how we got through that but I’m glad we did.”

Stars including Robbie Williams, 36, have filmed tributes for the singer, who died last October, but BZ haven’t watched them yet.

Shane revealed: “We’re going to get together on the night it goes out and watch it all the way through.”

The guys duet with Mika, 26, on new single Gave It All Away, which he wrote.

Stephen’s husband Andrew Cowles, 32, watched filming and confirmed: “It would be nice if they could find the strength to continue to tour.”

Boyzone’s new album Brother is out on Monday.

WESTLIFE TO HELP PROMOTING 'WHO'S CALLING' AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Childline received enough calls from troubled young people last year to fill Croke Park 10 times over.

The 24-hour service put the 25% surge in demand partly down to increased awareness of child abuse in the wake of the Ryan and Murphy reports.

The helpline's national advocacy manager, Mary Nicholson, said children felt more able to speak out after the probes into paedophilia and cover-ups in the Catholic Church.

Around 13% of calls last year related to abuse and welfare issues - an increase of 11% on 2008.

Family financial problems were also cited as a source of stress for many of the helpline's 815,000 calls in 2009 - of which just over 60% were answered.

More than 60% of children contacted the helpline about worries in their personal life such as school and mental health problems.

Around 11% expressed concerns about their sexuality, with another 7% relating to peer and family relationships.

The round-the-clock service, run by the ISPCC, has also unveiled Westlife as its new brand ambassadors.

The boyband will help the charity promote its new Who's Calling awareness campaign to highlight the problems facing children who get in touch.

Since its establishment 22 years ago, the helpline has listened to almost 3 million children in Ireland. The service costs about 4 million euro to run annually and relies on the support of around 300 volunteers.

WESTLIFE AND BOYZONE DUET FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

Oh yes, it's like all the things our Irish, boyband-loving dreams were made of. In fact, our 15-year-old selves did a little jig when we saw it happen before our eyes.

That's right, Boyzone and Westlife have finally teamed up - and it was all for a very emotional tribute to Stephen Gately.

Joking about whether their super group should be called "Westzone" or "Boyzlife", Ronan told us he found the day of rehearsals and reminiscing "very emotionally draining" but knew Stephen was looking down on them while they recorded their ITV1 special.

Nadine Coyle also joined the lads on stage (in a very boobalicious dress) for a version of Love Me For A Reason and Mika collaborated with them for Gave It All Away while Stephen's sister, Michelle and husband, Andy, watched on.

Despite it being an emotional night, Mikey, Ronan, Keith and Shane sounded great, singing live for the studio full of their fans. You can catch Boyzone: A Tribute To Stephen Gately on Sunday 21 March on ITV1.

NO TOTS UNTIL YOU'RE TOP OF THE POPS

WESTLIFE star Kian Egan has ruled out starting a family with wife Jodi Albert until her girlband scores a hit.

The singer, who co-manages Jodi and her pop group with music mogul Louis Walsh, married the London babe last May in the Bahamas.

But pop heartthrob Kian confessed he has no interest in following in the footsteps of Westlife dad-ofthree Shane Filan, 30, or Nicky Byrne, 31, who has twins with wife Georgina Ahern.

Parents Instead, he insists the couple are more focused on being pop stars than being parents.

Kian, 29, from Sligo, said: "We've got careers to fulfill first.

"Jodi's only 26 and I'm only 29, so we've still got plenty of time.

"She's so engrossed in the band, her mind isn't on kids.

"The band is her baby, and the focus will stay on our careers for the next few years, that's for sure.

"There's an awful lot left for Westlife and for me as an individual. "Fatherhood is a whole different chapter."

Jodi and bandmates Leigh Learmont, 19, Sharon Condon, 24, Kasey Smith, 20, and Corrina Durran, 23, sang a track called When The Stars Go Blue on the Late Late Show in December 2008.

But, the five-piece, who are signed to Mercury records, have yet to pick a name or release the song.

Despite the lull, Kian is confident the girls will be a success.

He said: "They're in the studio making an album.

"It's about getting it right so that they last a very long time."

And Kian added that kids aren't completely out of the picture.

He said: "When Jodi and I feel like we've done enough, we'll chill out and start having babies."

HERE'S TO YOU STEO - BOYZ' BIRTHDAY BASH FOR PAL EXCLUSIVE - WESTLIFE -

BOYZONE have planned a reunion to toast late bandmate Stephen Gately on what would've been his 34th birthday.

They will celebrate tragic pal Steo's life with a slap-up dinner on St Patrick's Day.

Keith Duffy, 36, Shane Lynch, 33, and Mikey Graham, 37, will meet up with Ronan Keating, 32, for the meal after his solo gig in Nottingham.

Keith, who plays Ciaran McCarthy on Coronation Street, said: "We're all going to get together to raise a glass in memory of Stephen.

Tribute

"We'll go to Ronan's show and then have dinner. It will be a low-key but meaningful tribute to him.

"It's important to be together. We'll celebrate Stephen's birthday for him."

The Dublin lads, release Gave It All Away, their first single since Stephen's death, tomorrow. Next Monday they release Brother, their first studio album for 11 years.

Keith said: "I was talking to Ronan last night and we realised that if Brother goes to No1 in its first week of release, it will be there for Stephen's birthday. It would be very special if that happened as the album is dedicated to his memory.

"There have been some very good things happening lately which lead me to believe that Stephen is up there looking after us all."

The band are now finalising plans to set up a scholarship in memory of Stephen which will pay to put underprivileged children through music college.

And, the guys are also in discussions to go on a tour of Ireland and the UK.

Keith said: "There was a time when if someone asked us if we'd ever tour again, I'd have said we can't go on stage without Stephen.

"But we've done a couple of performances on TV as a four piece and, I have to say, although it was hard and really heart wrenching, we all felt that Stephen would urge us to carry on and we want to honour that. If the album does well then we'll probably go on tour near to Christmas."

Stephen died in October of fluid on the lungs at his holiday home in Majorca.

Keith says that the hardest part of losing his mate is knowing what he is missing.

Sad

He added: "I'm sad and I miss him.

"It does get easier but then there are bad days when the emotion overwhelms you.

"I'm more sad for his loss as this year was going to be so exciting for him and all of us."

Boyzone will be joined by Westlife and Derry babe Nadine Coyle, to film an ITV1 tribute to Stephen tomorrow.

It is due on Irish screens in late March.
