 SLIGO MANIA

WESTLIFE mania has provided a welcome tourism boom in the band's home town. Sligo has become mecca for fans who make pilgrimages to the town much like the famous trek of Beatles fans to Liverpool.

The influx of the pop idols' supporters from as far away as Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa is proving a big boost for tourism in the western town, once home to W.B Yeats.

It is estimated that thousands of the band's diehard supporters jet in during the summer to see where Shane Filan, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily grew up.

And the band is set to get its very own Hall of Fame when a huge collection of memorabilia goes on permanent display in Sligo Museum.

Fans stop off at the band members' school, their homes, the local record shop and even their relatives' working places during their holiday in a well-trodden Westlife sightseeing tour.

The manager of Church Street Gallery, who recently hosted an exhibition of Westlife memorabilia, said she was stunned by the devotion of the band's fans.

She said: "Sligo is to Westlife what Liverpool is to the Beatles.

"Thousands come every summer. They go to the record shop, then to the Morgan clothes shop run by Shane's sister.

"Before it was closed down, the Filan family's Cafolas Cafe was inundated with fans. They would always take the menus away as keepsakes.

"They go around to their houses sometimes. One girl came in looking thrilled after she spoke to Kian's Dad.

"They came from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and South Africa. One girl came from the UK three times to see this collection.

"I was flabbergasted. They are come to Sligo on their holidays purely because the Westlife guys grew up here.

"One girl who came in had her bedroom turned into a shrine to the band and makes her husband sleep under a Westlife duvet cover.

"Another girl had been to 72 concerts."

She said the band gave the exhibition plenty of support in recent weeks.

She said: "Kian was in quite a few times and he gave us a couple of pieces. Shane's mum and Mark's mum were both in.

"There were hundreds of fans coming in during the summer and it quietened down a bit after that. They vary in age from 8 to 13 year- olds to 20, 30 and 40 year olds.

"The amount of people dragging husbands behind them was amazing. There are people who come every year hoping to catch a glimpse of them."

The Business Manager of the North-west tourism office, Martina Bromley, said the band is great for tourism in the area.

She said up to 100 fans make enquiries about the band every week in their office during the summer months.

"There are a lot of European fans and a lot of English. They are just delighted to walk down O'Connell Street in case they bump into one of them.

"There is a very big interest in Westlife and it has been great for Sligo tourism.

"People who have never come on holiday to Sligo are going because of Westlife."

The headmaster of Summerhill College, Michael Murphy, where the Sligo members of the band went to school said the Westlife fans often come in to look around.

He said:"People come to have a look around the grounds, sometimes they want to speak to the teachers who taught them.

"They come in the summer and sometimes when school is on. Everyone is welcome here and we are used to it."

 NICKY'S HORROR STORY

I’ve come across some weird stories in my time but I reckon this takes the biscuit.

Westlife’s Nicky Byrne had to change hotels in Las Vegas — because he has a fear of lifts without windows.

Nicky and the lads were checked in to the Four Seasons hotel while they shot their new swing video.

But their rooms were on the 48th floor and Nicky doesn’t like lifts without windows because he feels too enclosed, poor lad.

He checked out and took a room on the tenth floor of the adjoining Mandalay Bay hotel.

A source said: “Nicky was mortified. He can manage if it’s not too far but 48 floors is full on.”

But hats off to plucky Nicky — he has kept on the Four Seasons room and is determined to spend at least one night on floor 48 before the trip is over.

The boys are in Vegas to perform tonight’s World Music Awards.

WESTLIFE WIVES TO HIT CATWALK BUT WON'T STRUT STUFF NEAR TOP MODELS

THEY are blonde, beautiful and married to pop stars, but it seems what the Westwives don't have is the stage presence to take to the catwalk alongside Ireland's topmodels.

Gillian Walsh, Georgina Byrne and Kerry McFadden are being paid an undisclosed sum to take part in the first VIP Live fashion show at the RDS at the end of the month. The deal also includes a photo shoot and interview, which will appear in VIP magazine next week.

The Westlife wives are the star attraction of the show and will model their choice of designer clothes, but the three pop wives will not take to the stage alongside the professional models and will receive no training other than a single rehearsal on the day.

VIP editor Emer O'Reilly-Hyland said: "The three will come out together, but they will not be treated the same as the models. It's not fair to anyone who is not a professional to have them next to the top 16 models in Ireland.

"In terms of showing clothes, it takes a professional. There's a reason models are trained. Even young or inexperienced models stand out a mile in the way they move, their confidence and the way they show the clothes.

"I in no way mean to be negative about the Westlife wives," she said. "It's just we want to leave the professional models to do their job."

Westlife will be away on tour on the night of the fashion show, but Bryan McFadden is expected to turn up at the RDS to support Kerry. O'Reilly-Hyland admitted VIP has invested heavily in the fashion show and does not expect to profit from it. She said: "We want it to be a big success, so we have paid out for the best of everything. It is a way of bringing the pages of VIP magazine to life. We hope to be able to do it twice a year from now on."

It has not yet been decided which designers' clothes will be modelled by Kerry, Gillian and Georgina, and there is no arrangement to allow them to keep the outfits.

She said: "They are beautiful girls, and their personalities really come through in the pictures we got from their photo shoot. They will add glamour and excitement to the evening because people are curious about the women behind famous men."

TEACHER'S BROTHERLY LOVE BEHIND WESTLIFE STAR'S RISE TO THE TOP

WESTLIFE heart-throb Kian Egan has revealed for the first time the inspiration behind his success - his South Yorkshire schoolteacher brother.

The Irish star has won millions of fans and earned himself a fortune as a member of the hit boy band, but says much of it is down to older sibling Gavin.

And 23-year-old Kian says he still rings his brother - who nurtured his musical aspirations when they were growing up in Sligo, Ireland - for tips.

Kian told The Star: "He taught me piano and guitar when I was a kid. He drummed it into my head to do it.

"Gavin was in a rock band and his first guitar was the one I first picked up. "That's how I got into all this. I am playing piano and guitar on tour and the first thing I do is ring Gavin and ask 'Where do I go to get the music?'"

Kian's lookalike brother, who is in his 30s and teaches at a Sheffield secondary school, lives in Treeton with his wife and three children.
Kian says his nephew and two nieces are all Westlife fans and the whole family come to shows when the band is in town.

And despite Kian's success - Westlife have sold 30 million records and notched up 11 number ones - he says there is no envy.

"There's never been jealousy. Gavin's passion for music is more classical than pop," said Kian. "But he has never missed a show when we've played in Sheffield. They come and hang around backstage.
"Every time I am in Sheffield I try to stay before and after the show. He has got three kids and I go round to his house to see them. I have been over numerous times, not just because of the band."

Kian revealed his South Yorkshire link as he and Westlife reassured fans their shows next month at the Hallam FM Arena will go on - despite the shock departure of bandmate Bryan McFadden.

He announced at the beginning of March how he was quitting the group to spend more time with his daughters and wife Kerry, winner of the I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here reality show.

Kian confessed: "We are all very shocked by the whole thing. We are upset and everything but we are moving onwards and upwards. We feel the band should go on. Bryan found it very hard to be on the road. We spent the last six years with him, so it is like losing a member of the family. It was very difficult. We wish him the best of luck, but we must get over it and try to forget about it."

Kian revealed the rest of the lads - Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily - tried to persuade the father-of-two to reconsider when he broke the news to them.

Kian says he is now looking forward to Westlife's return to Attercliffe on April 29 and 30 and May 1. The band will play more than 70 shows across Europe and South East Asia.

"The attitude now is 'get up and do it'," said Kian. "We are too passionate - we love what we do too much to let it slip from under our feet.

"Just because one has gone it does not mean the other four have to finish. This is how we are”.

 IT MAKES KIAN SICK

WHICH comes first, the Sun or the sick? Or let me put it another way. If that great trumpeter of truth, the Sun, reports that you have been sick all over yourself, chances are you will be when you read it. It's called self-fulfilling profit, something which must please Rupert Murdoch inordinately.

This is precisely what Rupert Murdoch's puerile pamphlet did to Westlife star Kian Egan. A Stockholm nightclub was apparently the setting for Kian's antics.

I rang Kian about the article - which also claimed that Kian started a fight with a bystander. "That's ridiculous. I was messing about with one of Westlife's security people," Kian told me. "The Sun is always looking to have a go at Westlife. "

One girl who doesn't want a go at Kian Egan - not that kind of go anyway - is Hollyoaks babe Jodi Albert. She and the Westlife star have been dating for 18 months now. They spent the week together at Kian's bachelor mansion in Sligo. "I always enjoy my time in Sligo with Kian," Jodi told me. "It is nice to get away from the mad world down here." On Wednesday, they went to see Bridget Jones in the local cinema. On Thursday night they ordered a Chinese and curled up on the couch to watch Four Weddings and a Funeral on DVD. There are no plans for a wedding of their own, he adds. "We're just enjoying our lives." I think I know what he means.

Meanwhile the happy pair are planning Christmas in Florida. Lets hope they stay out of the Sun.

WESTLIFE EVOKE MEMORIES OF RAT PACK ERA WITH NEW ALBUM

Westlife are back in full flow with their brand new Rat Pack themed album, "Allow Us to be Frank", which is a collection of the band's favourite classics from the golden Rat Pack era.

Featuring tracks originally performed by legends such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr and Frank Sinatra, which were hits long before any of the Westlife lads were even born, the album pays homage to those bourbon-filled years when the Rat Pack used to hang out and perform at The Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

On "Allow us to be Frank", Westlife fully capture the spirit and image of that unique period – with immaculately tailored suits and their hair smoothed back, the band couldn't look more authentic.

Produced by long-time collaborator, Steve Mac, this album highlight's the band's vocal prowess and ability. They recorded the album with a full 60 piece orchestra at Phoenix Studios in Wembley, and all four lads give exceptional performances.

The album features 12 classic tracks, including 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'Mac the Knife', 'Ain't That a Kick in the Head', 'Come Fly with Me' and 'Smile' to name but a few.

To complete the authentic look, the boys spent time recording videos in LA and Las Vegas. While in Vegas, they made sure to visit some of the legendary Rat Pack locations, and also performed at the World Music Awards where they were presented with an award for this year's Best Selling Irish Act.

The process of recording such an unusual album was tough, but well worth the effort, according to Sligo's Kian Egan.

"We had a great time recording this album, because we have always loved the whole spirit and style of the Rat Pack era", he said.

"They had a strong family vibe going on, which is what we have in Westlife.

"The only problem was choosing the material with such a strong catalogue to pick from. It was tough, but we got there in the end and we're delighted with the outcome".

The album, which goes on general release this week-end, is sure to consolidate Westlife's reputation as the biggest vocal band in the world with unrivalled success. They are the only recording artists in the history of the awards to win the prestigious Record of the Year three times; they have performed to over three million fans on four sell-out tours, and they have sold over 4 million records globally, including a record-breaking 12 UK number ones, not to mention a galaxy of Brit Awards, MTV awards and Irish Meteor Awards.

 LOVE TOUCHY ABOUT FEEHILY

THERE'S no love lost between Mark Feehily of Westlife and Kurt Cobain's widow.

Mark was trying to enjoy a performance of Alicia Keyes at the recent World Music Awards in Las Vegas when Courtney Love - plus ca change - was determined to be heard above all else. "Can you shut the f*** up!" Feehily bravely informed the psychotically-inclined Miss Love. Like Vincent Browne, it is an unconscionably long time since Courtney's gargoyle gob last fell shut. For which Feehily surely deserves an award.

Former Westlife co-manager Ronan Keating is equally deserving of plaudits. He sang an impromptu version of Tomorrow Never Comes on a table at the Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich last Saturday night.

The occasion: his cousin Trevor Collier's stag do. Later one of the party was dragged out by security for throwing beer, and a mass brawl erupted briefly. Like Ronan's long-awaited new LP, Ten Years of Hits, luckily Ronan was a huge hit with the bouncers. (Trevor's wedding to Sally Anne McBride is on February 3 in Howth.)

On Tuesday night Ronan flew his wife Yvonne to Cannes for the launch of Shell Town, a major cartoon series he has invested in, and which is being marketed worldwide by his brother Gary's event management company.

In the pilot, Ronan does the voice of character Splat while Kerry McFadden plays Cracker (wouldn't Courtney Love be a more obvious choice to play a Cracker?), Splat's best friend.

Ronan's best friends George Michael and boyfriend Kenny will be in London at the Cafe de Paris on Tuesday night for the unveiling of Keating's new album. Geri Halliwell, Girls Aloud and Jordan have also RSVPed.

Tune in next week at the same time for a full report.

WESTLIFE TOP THE VIRTUAL POP CHARTS

THE first official download chart was unveiled last night with Westlife's 'Flying Without Wings' at number one.

The chart is based on music legally downloaded from the internet.

Many predict it will spell the end of the traditional top 40 and hasten the demise of High Street record shops.

But although the download chart represents the future of the music industry, it was a re-released track from 1999 which claimed the top spot.

Westlife re-issued 'Flying Without Wings' especially for the occasion and fans downloaded it in their thousands to help the band secure a place in chart history.

The Irish boyband outsold the likes of Blazin' Squad, Maroon 5 and Keane.

The chart was counted down on Radio 1 during the Scott Mills Show and will be broadcast from 6pm-7pm every Wednesday.

It is compiled on the basis of tracks legally downloaded from online sites including iTunes and Napster.

Their download sales data is transmitted daily to an independent market research company for the purposes of compiling the chart.

More than two million tracks have been legally downloaded since January.

The arrival of Apple's iTunes, where songs are available for as little as €1.20 each, has fuelled demand.

The scale of the download market is vast when compared with the traditional singles market.

While 200 or so singles are available in record shops each week, the download chart is registering sales of more than 40,000 different tracks per week.

WHY SLIGO SHOULD BE PROMOTED AS A MECCA FOR WESTLIFE FANS

In much the same way as Liverpool draws Beatles fans from all corners of the globe who want to retrace the early steps of the Fab Four, Sligo is becoming something of a mecca for Westlife followers, many of whom descended on the town last week during the band's sell-out run of concerts at The Point in Dublin.

Hundreds of fans jetted into Dublin from all over Europe for the Point concerts, and many of them took the opportunity to journey to Sligo to see the birthplace of and local landmarks associated with Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan.

Kristina Johansson, Andre Karlsson and Anna Johansson made the journey from Sweden, and were very excited to be in the home town of Westlife.

"We came over for the Dublin concert and decided that since we were in Ireland we could not go home without visiting Sligo, where Westlife began", explained Kristina.

"We have been to see the homes of Shane and Kian, and we have been told that Mark once worked in a local pizza shop, so now we're off to track that down".

Andre revealed that Westlife enjoy a huge following in his home country, and said it was special to be able to see the band perform in Dublin while also being able to visit Sligo.

"It would be a real bonus to meet the boys or members of their families, but just to be here and to see the places associated with the band is a real thrill", he said.

Another visitor on a Westlife trek to Sligo this week was 30 years old Shinobu Ishihara, who travelled all the way from Osaka, Japan, especially to sample the Westlife roots at first hand.

She had bought tickets on the internet for three of the Dublin concerts, and travelled by train to Sligo on Friday last.

"I just had to come and see where Westlife started", she said. "The band has a huge following in Japan, and I had no hesitation in making the long journey just to see them perform and to see where they were born", Shinobu told us before booking a taxi to take her off in search of Westlife landmarks.

A Scottish family were particularly lucky, as their excursion brought them face to face with two of their heroes.

Kevin Flannery of The Record Room, which has itself become an essential drop-in centre for the visiting Westlife fans, tells the story: "A mother and her two teenage daughters were in the shop asking where they might go to see some Westlife landmarks, so I gave them a list of places worth seeing. They took a taxi out to see Shane's new house at Carraroe, and as they were there, Shane pulled up in his car, got out and chatted to them, signed autographs and posed for pictures.

"They must have thought they were in heaven, but it got even better, because when they went out to see Kian Egan's family home, Kian came out to greet them as well.

"They came to the shop the next day to tell me how they got on, and they were absolutely thrilled. It was clearly an amazing experience for them".

Not all fans are so lucky, of course, but it doesn't stop them coming to Sligo. According to Mr. Flannery, who keeps a record of the visits to his store of Westlife followers, there is a definite tourism opening attached to the group's association with Sligo.

"In the past month alone, we've had Westlife fans here from Scotland, England, Wales, Japan, Germany, Holland and the USA, as well as from all over Ireland.

"They buy anything associated with the group, and they all want directions to places such as St. Anne's Youth Club, where the boys played their first gig as Westlife, or the Hawk's Well where IOYou performed, and, of course, they all want to see the family homes.

"Westlife really is a big tourist attraction, and I'm not sure that the town makes the most of it. It's something that maybe could be promoted a lot more", he says.

WESTLIFE BOYS WILL ALWAYS BE PRICELESS - EVEN WITHOUT BRIAN

BRIAN would have been proud - there may have been an empty space on stage at last night's Westlife concert in Dublin's Point Theatre but there was nothing vacant about the performance.

It was the first Dublin date for the group since local boy McFadden's shock announcement last March that he would no longer feature in Ireland's favourite chart-topping outfit.

It made little difference though to the near capacity crowd that jammed the Point for another taste of the musical magic that has delivered 12 number one singles and five multi-platinum albums.

With 480,000 tickets sold for their current tour, just 24 people are reported to have inquired about a ticket refund since the news of Brian's untimely departure, signifying a healthy future for the group.

The reliable contingent of young fans were keen to welcome the fab four and as they arrived on stage a deafening eruption of screams signalled Westlife's days are far from numbered.

Brian's departure did little to dampen the mood for 12-year-old Acerina who said: "I think they will be just as good without Brian, as good as always."

Appearing in gangster outfits Cian, Shane, Mark and Nicky were an entertaining centre piece to a show defined by colour and adrenaline.

Opening with crowd-pleaser 'Turnaround', the boys sent a bolt of electricity through the crowd in a promising taste of what awaits the thousands of fans said to witness the 10 dates at the famous Dublin venue.

Fans surged towards the stage in a bid to catch a glimpse of their heroes singing favourites 'My Girl', 'Swears Again' and 'Mandy'.

The group were also keen to snuff out touts with black market tickets advertised at over 10 times their face value before the gigs.

An extra 100 tickets per show were quickly released by concert promoters but for die-hard fans admission to Westlife will always be priceless - even without Brian.

THE WESTLIFE BOYS WHO NEVER MADE IT

Ireland's most successful boyband is back touring again after the departure of Bryan McFadden but what happened to the others in the group's original line-up? John Meagher reports

As the four remaining members of Westlife play a series of sell-out gigs in Dublin next week, there will be three people who will perhaps think again of what might have been. Michael Garrett, Derek Lacey, and Graham Keighron are the Westlife boys who never were - original band members whose services were disposed of before the group made it big.

The three lads are now a trainee hairdresser, barman and a trainee garda - and their stories are told in a new book by Padraig Meehan, the band's unofficial manager during its formative period.

Today Westlife are one of the country's most successful pop exports and have sold more than 30 million albums.

Despite Bryan McFadden's departure earlier this year, the remaining four - Sligo natives Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan, and Dubliner Nicky Byrne - continue to perform as Westlife, playing sold-out shows across Europe.

But McFadden isn't the only member to have left the band. Original Sligo members Garrett, Lacey and Keighron were shown the door by newly-appointed manager Louis Walsh - the mastermind behind Boyzone.

Karaoke No More: The Real Story of the Beginning of Westlife purports to tell the warts-and-all history of the band's pre-fame days.

The book documents how six school friends set about forming an all-singing, all-dancing boyband that could be Ireland's answer to the Backstreet Boys.

The band got together in 1997 after Filan, Feehily and Egan had been in a local production of Grease. Encouraged by the director, Mary McDonogh, the three joined forces with classmates Michael Garrett, Derek Lacey and Graham Keighron and started playing covers at local clubs and supermarkets. The sextet, initially known by such monikers as Six As One, IOU and IOYOU, became something of a fixture in the north-west and recorded a demo, Together Girl Forever, co-written by Filan and Feehily.

At that stage the band were looked after by Meehan, McDonogh and another local, Averyl Dooher, who had formed a company called Streetwise. But when Streetwise drafted a potential contract, IOU refused to sign it.

The band, and their parents, had bigger ambitions: Louis Walsh was firmly in their sights.

It was Shane Filan's mother, Mae, who made contact with Walsh. She hoped that the fact that she also came from Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, would get her a sympathetic ear. Walsh agreed to meet the band and was impressed by their enthusiasm.

He organised for them to support the Backstreet Boys at the RDS Simmonscourt Arena.

Walsh saw something that encouraged him to manage the band.

Ronan Keating, Boyzone's ambitious frontman, was invited on board as co-manager. It was a euphoric moment for the sextet, but the joy would be short-lived.

Walsh, it transpired, didn't think Lacey fitted in with the band - and it was up to Filan to tell him he was out. Lacey was devastated. His mother rang Louis Walsh and the manager told her he thought her son was too mature-looking and was unable to dance.

"Derek stays indoors for days," writes Padraig Meehan. "He can't bear to see anyone. Later on he will get used to the jibes. Shelflife. No life. Now he is in grief. He feels totally isolated. His friends have moved on and left him behind."

Meehan describes how angry and upset he, McDonogh and Dooher were. Westlife had moved on without them, and they could only watch.

"I was deeply disappointed when the band went off to be managed by Louis Walsh, after the amount of work that Mary and Averyl and I did with them. But when I thought about it, it was obvious that Mae Filan's decision to get in touch with Louis was a wise and pragmatic business move."

But for the five remaining members, an important day loomed: a 'showcase' in Dublin's Westbury Hotel, which would be attended by BMG head Simon Cowell - not yet the household name he would become as a judge on Pop Idol. Cowell didn't like the band. In particular, he didn't like Shane Filan's look. Walsh knew the band would have to be tinkered with again. Keighron was the next to go. He became their road manager for a while. With only four members remaining, auditions were held for a fifth member.

Nicky Byrne and Bryan McFadden both impressed Walsh, and both were asked to stay to see who got on best with the band, but the Sligo guys got on so well with the two Dubliners that Walsh found he couldn't choose between them.

He wanted a five-piece rather than a sextet, however - and so decided that one of the Sligo singers would have to go. Michael Garrett went, and it was Graham Keighron who ended up telling him. Meehan reports that Garrett hung around for a few days afterwards, totally morose. He had effectively been replaced by people he had helped to audition.

Louis Walsh has described axing the three as the most difficult decision he has had to make in his time in management.

None of the three former members of the band wishes to speak on the subject any more. According to Padraig Meehan, Lacey, Garrett and Keighron have no contact with the three who went on to fame, and rarely see each other now either. Shortly after Westlife first broke, Lacey spoke of his anger when he saw the boys flaunting expensive jewellery, clothes and cars. At times, he said in an interview, he felt the impulse to "go ballistic some night, let it all out". But he resisted.

Everybody knows what happened to Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan. But what of the other three?

Keighron abandoned the road manager job and returned to Sligo to become a dance teacher. He is now a trainee hairdresser. Garrett did a bit of modelling, went to college and is now training to be a garda. Last year his name was linked to a part in Coronation Street, but it never materialised. Lacey now works as a barman in the town.

'Karaoke No More: The Real Story of the Beginnings of Westlife' by Padraig Meehan is published by Brandon. Westlife play a series of concerts at the Point Theatre, Dublin from May 11.

GO WEST, YOUNG MAN .. IT'LL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN AS BRYAN BOWS OUT

THE FANS cried, the lads cried, the wives cried. We even thought Louis Walsh might cry. It was official - Bryan McFadden and Westlife had parted ways. Things would never be the same again.

The band made their last appearance together yesterday at a press conference at the rather grand Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin to announce the departure of the 24-year-old from the group.

However, the show will go on and a statement released by Westlife read that "in the tradition of all great groups, they are now a four-piece".

Yesterday they announced that while they are "devastated" by Bryan's decision, they have come to terms with it. It was an amicable split, they said.

Bryan told how he had made his decision in order to spend more time with his wife Kerry and their two daughters.

He said he was unhappy for the last six months and, especially since the birth of his daughter Lily, felt he was not committing 100pc to either the band or to his family and it was was becoming very hard to juggle both.

He had been "thinking it through" for the past six months and had informed his Westlife colleagues following last week's Meteor Awards.

"The guys want me to be happy," he added.

Visibly emotional and in shaky tones, Kian Egan read a statement on behalf of the group saying that since their launch in 1999, they have had a very special close bond and are more like brothers than band-mates.

Crying and hugging one another at the back of the room, Bryan's wife Kerry stood with fellow 'Westlife Wives' Club' members - the Taoiseach's daughter, Georgina Ahern who is married to Nicky Byrne, and Gillian Walsh, who is married to Shane Filan.

"Westlife are now united as four and are just confirming plans for their next studio album after their World Arena tour, scheduled for release something this autumn," Kian added.

The next record will be an album of duets with global superstars, including Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, manager Louis Walsh revealed.

Bryan will be missed but Westlife will continue and it is basically "business as usual", he said. Rumours abound that Bryan plans to further his songwriting career. There's even talk that he and Kerry have been offered a joint TV deal by celebrity producer Simon Cowell.

But the Dubliner claims to have no new career plans in the pipeline.

PETER IN CHART BATTLE WITH WESTLIFE

PETER Andre is on course for a number one record this weekend with his re-release of Mysterious Girl.

Only Westlife stand in the way of Andre reaching the top spot in Britain, with their new single Obvious.

First day sales figures show that Andre's single has been flying off the shelves in British record stores - eight years after it first hit the charts.

The star's career has been revived by his appearance on I'm A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here! and his relationship with fellow contestant Jordan.

"Mysterious Girl has been selling very strongly so far," said Gennaro Castaldo, of music retailer HMV.

"In some of our stores it is the best-seller, in others Westlife are out in front. But overall Peter is just ahead."

LOUIS' FIRM EARNED €2.7M FROM WESTLIFE

POP svengali Louis Walsh's Brill Management earned €2.7m in management services fees from the company behind boyband Westlife, in the year to August 2003.

This compared with an even more impressive €3.5m in management fees charged to Rolo Management by Brill the previous year.

Rolo Management was set up in 1998 by Mr Walsh and former Boyzone member-turned-solo singer Ronan Keating, to manage boyband Westlife.

In July 2003, Mr Keating transferred his 40pc shareholding in Rolo over to Mr Walsh for an undisclosed sum.

At the same time, he also resigned as a director of Rolo to be replaced by Desmond Morris.

Rolo Management had retained profits of €1,116 in the year. But it also had just over €1m cash in the bank, versus €3.2m the previous year.

Debtors stood at €185,603 and creditors due to be repaid within one year stood at €1.2m.

Brill Management, which is wholly-owned by Mr Walsh, handles the rest of his acts including stars such as Samantha Mumba and Girls Aloud, Bellefire and Six.

Brill had just over €100,000 in the bank for the period to the end of August 2003.

Retained profits stood at €4,150, with debtors of almost €1m and creditors due to repaid within the year of €1.4m.

Mr Walsh is also a director of a number of other companies, including most recently XFM Radio (Dublin) Ltd which is presumably to manage his bid for a Dublin radio licence with Capital Radio Group, Thomas Crosbie Holdings, Mean Fiddler Group and POD nightclub owner John Reynolds.
