CONCERT
FOR THE SULTAN OF BRUNEI |
Westlife earned
£2.5million for one half-hour gig - they were paid £500,000 each to
play just SEVEN songs for the Sultan of Brunei's family.
Kian Egan, Bryan McFadden, Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan
say they were treated like royalty on the trip last weekend.
The lads, who racked up a record five No1 singles in a row, visited
Brunei during a promo tour of the Far East.
Kian said: "It was the best concert we've ever done. The Sultan has
an amazing palace, and we played in front of 50 of the royal family.
They seemed to enjoy it, and it gave us a buzz. It was over very
quickly, and we played an encore of Flying Without Wings and Swear
It Again."
Later, the Sultan's son showed the band around the grounds and let
them drive one of the family's huge supercar collection, a £94,750
Porsche 911 Turbo.
Other stars who have played for the Sultan include Michael Jackson,
Phil Collins, Tina Turner and Mick Hucknall.

POP INTO HISTORY AND TAKE TO THE BED |
IRISH teen pop sensations Westlife made
pop history yesterday with five consecutive British number one chart
hits — and celebrated by going to bed.
The clean cut chart toppers brushed past The Beatles and the Spice
Girls to make pop history, but instead of painting the town, they
hit the hay.
Contacted in New York at 3pm EST, band member Kian Egan, said his
fellow band members had gone to bed to rest after a five hour
flight.
The band were flying over the Atlantic when they learned they had
pushed Spice Girl Mel C off the coveted top spot with their song
‘Fool Again,’ making them the first group to see their first five
singles enter the British charts at No 1.
Westlife’s five fresh faced fellas, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne, Bryan
McFadden, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily, prove the heart throb factor
eclipses Girl Power when it comes to loyal fans buying your singles.
Even though midweek sales figures showed them marginally ahead of
Mel C’s single ‘Never be the same Again,’ fears were mounting in
Westlife’s camp that since this was the group’s fifth single from
their album, many of their core fans would already have a copy
leaving the single with weak sales.
However, the band’s management, which includes Boyzone frontman
Ronan Keating, need not have worried as the lads blazed into pole
position.
Egan said: “This is really incredible, we never really dreamed about
getting this far. With four number ones already we never really
thought we’d go on to get another one in a row, and especially this
week when the record sales were so tight.
“It is a brilliant thing for Irish music and for both us and
B*Witched to break into such a difficult market in the first place.”
Although the Spice Girl’s first five number one singles reached No
1, not all of them entered the charts at the top. The Girls’ first
single, ‘Wannabe’, only managed the reach the No 2 position in the
first week, climbing that extra place one week later.
Westlife has won thousands of fans across Ireland and Britain, and
they now hope for similar success in the US. The quintet are there
for a four week tour, in a bid to crack the difficult US market —
something Take That and Boyzone failed to do.

pop duo Phats and Small sang and danced to his
bands own hit "Turn Around" as he partied on the
dance floor.
The event will be hailed as
"the ShowBiz party of the year" and was held
last night in Dublin. The reason for the party
was to celebrate Shane from Westlife's 21st
birthday.
The massive bash was held in
Dublin's top night-club Lillies Bordello which
was also celebrating it's first night open after
four months and multi-million pound revamp.
Starting just after 8pm.The

his own.
Most of the 500 guests were
friends of the band aswell as a massive number
of Shane's family who made their way up from
Sligo for the night.

WESTLIFE LIVE CHAT FROM 2000 |
Question from Lucy
Westwood: What can we expect in the 2001
tour?
Mark: The 2001 tour is something that is
exciting us very much. We're in the stages of
coming up with ideas, and it's all coming
together nicely with set design, the band, the
lights and costumes etc. We want everyone to go
home thinking it was a great show. A lot of
people are expecting our ballads, but it's not
going to be boring where we just sing ballads.
There will be uptempo songs too - very uptempo!
We're even going to speed up some of the songs
that we normally do as ballads...
Question from Melissa Tan: Who, within
the group, would you most like to be for a day
and why?
Mark: It depends. We spend so much time
with each other, I don't think anyone could
expect us go get along all the time. Sometimes I
feel I hate them, and sometimes they feel they
hate me, but we do get on very very well!
There's no-one I get on with better than anyone
else. Different days, you're in the mood for
different people. Some days, for example, you'd
want to be with Bryan because he's lively, but
if you're more chilled out, you may not want to
hear him joking all the time! It just depends on
your mood!
Question from Laura: If you could take
anyone anywhere for Christmas, who would it be
and where would you take them?
Mark: I would take my entire family -
cousins, auntie's, uncles, grannies, to Orlando,
maybe. All the kids could have a great time in
Disneyland, and the adults could spend time in
the sun.
Question from Bambi: If you could record
any song what would it be and why?
Mark: Personally, I'd record one of my
own songs that I wrote myself, but a cover
version... maybe Killing me Softly by the
Fugees, or Lauryn Hill, Doo Wop (That Thing).
Question from Jessica Ibbetson: I know
that you guys are doing a big UK tour next year.
Are you going to take that tour to other parts
of the world...like Australia?
Nicky: Yes. We're starting in the UK,
then Ireland, across Europe, then south-east
Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and then to South
America.
Question from Stephanie Baxter: If there
was one thing or person you would like to find
in your Christmas stocking who or what would it
be?
Nicky: A big Ferrari! Or Liz Hurley, if
my girlfriend didn't mind...
Question from Therese Nilsson: What makes
you cry?
Nicky: We do a lot of stuff where we meet
young kids who are terminally ill. Recently we
were on CBBC's Live and Kicking, and there was a
girl there with leukemia. It's just sad that it
should happen to someone that age.
Question from Nic Atkinson: I'm going to
one of your concerts next year. How can I get
your attention?
Nicky: I don't know really. Have a big
sign with something funny on it! Sometimes fans
have rude things on their signs which make us
laugh, but I'm not telling you to do that - make
up your own thing!
Question from Zeera: Why isn't Ronan
Keating your manager anymore?
Nicky: We've distanced ourselves from
each other. He's busy with his career, and we're
finding our feet. But we're going to remain
friends, and everything's cool.
Question from Wendy: What do you think
about George Michael's comments that the record
industry pays more attention to people who look
good rather than those who are actually
talented?
Nicky: In a way I agree. There are lots
of talented people who aren't as successful as
people who are good looking. Sometimes there are
bands playing in pubs in Ireland who aren't
signed but are absolutely fantastic. Record
companies need to look hard for talent.
Question
from Chloe: Have you ever had any really
embarrassing moments while performing in front
of thousands of fans?
Bryan: There was one time in Cyprus when
my trousers fell down on a live TV show. That
was pretty embarrassing! I just had really baggy
trousers on. I was dancing, and they just fell
down when I tried to fix my microphone! But I
was wearing underwear...
Question from Louis: Are you planning on
making your own film like the Spice Girls?
Bryan: No. That was a rubbish film, and I
don't think we'd want to do anything like that!
We'd like to act, though...
Question from Emma: Do you think you'll
get Christmas number one again this year, and if
so who will be your strongest competition?
Bryan: No. Bob the Builder will!
Question from Vicky: What were your first
impressions of each other when you first met?
Bryan: Nicky looked like a funeral
director in his suit, and they were all country
boys!
Question from Sara Ireland: Is there any
truth in the fights between you and Five?
Bryan: No, absolutely not! We're good
mates.
Question from Lyndsey Smith: What would
you call your first child?
Bryan: I've already decided that but I'm
not going to tell you! Oh okay. If it's a boy,
it's going to be Ronan, and if it's a girl,
Pisspotte - it's a French word!
Question from Reena Bhatt: Hi guys. What
is your favourite song on 'Coast To Coast'?
Kian: It's 'When You're Looking Like
That'.
Question from Anna Nilzon: What was Bryan
saying to Shane in the "My Love" video when they
are walking along the beach?
Kian: Bryan said, "I hope it doesn't
start to rain again, because it was raining a
lot before the video"!
Question from Roni: What has surprised
you most about being famous?
Kian: Being noticed as I walk down the
street, or in an airport, especially if we're
all together. But it's not so bad individually.
Question from Jodie: If you had a chance,
who would you go out with in the pop world?
Kian: I might ask Cat Deeley out. Or
Martine McCutcheon - she's gorgeous!
Question from Rozlynn: How has your life
changed since you joined Westlife?
Kian: Dramatically...we get to travel a
lot more. We see a lot more places around the
world and we get to meet a lot of beautiful
people.
Question from Stacey Mead: What would be
your favourite single to do a cover of?
Kian: Probably a classic Van Morrison
song, such as Moondance.
Shane: By the way...don't forget the
single is out - What Makes a Man/My Girl - and
it's out on Monday. So please go out and buy
it!?
Question from Karen O: What is the most
frightening thing that has ever happened to you?
Shane: We were on a plane to Australia,
and the plane got struck by lightning. The
lights went down for a split second. We were
struck four times in a row, and there was a lot
of turbulence. It was scary!
Question
from Nosheen Khan: From all the videos that
you have shot, which one is your favourite?
Shane: Mine is 'My Love'. I think it's a
great video, and we shot it in Ireland, so it's
very special to us.
Question from Kayle: Are all the songs
you sing to anyone in particular?
Shane: They're just aimed at everyone who
wants to listen to them - we haven't written any
of our singles yet. They can mean a lot of
things at once.
Question from Ash Dewb: Who inspired you
the most?
Shane: When I was younger it was Michael
Jackson. I always wanted to be in a band, or on
stage, or famous.
Question from Darren Standham: Who has
the worst habits in the group?
Shane: We all have really bad habits -
and I can't tell you what they are. Sorry!
Question from Lotty Clark: Do you ever
get lonely on tour?
Shane: Yes, we do a lot. But we can ring
our family, so it's not the worst thing in the
world. It's a dream job, but everyone gets
lonely sometimes.
Question from Kat: If the five of you
were in the Big Brother house, who would win and
who would be voted out first?
Shane: I would win because I'm speaking
now so I can say that! I think Bryan would be
out first - he wouldn't be able to stick it!
Question from Lindsey Williams: How long
do you think you'll be together for?
Shane: I hope we'll do about five studio
albums together, and some greatest hits. Perhaps
seven or so years. It depends on the fans!
Question from Catherine Shane: What is
your favourite colour?
Shane: It's silver. I love silver cars!
It looks cool. For clothes, I like black, blue
or navy.
Question from Hannah Thornley: How does
it feel to be one of the most famous boybands in
the world?
Shane: It's very cool. We're very proud
to be known well. We just try and work as hard
as we can, and become as big as we can. It's
great to know that fans around the world love
us.
Question from Stephanie George: Who do
you admire most?
Shane: My favourite woman is Faith Hill,
and American country singer. And I like Kylie
Minogue too. And I also admire my father and
mother. They've been very supportive, and I'm
just very proud of them.
Question from Kate: What do you think
'makes a man'?
Shane: I haven't got a clue! You tell me!
(He says to the BBC interviewer...) Charm,
humor, Irish eyes! If you have those, you're
sorted!
BBC Host: Here is Shane on behalf of
Westlife with a final word...
Shane: Thank you to all our fans from all
of us. We hope you like the new single -
hopefully we can get to number one! Thanks for
logging on, and see you soon, and have a Happy
Christmas and Happy New Year!

THOUSANDS
JOIN QUEUE FOR WESTLIFE TICKETS |
HE was no
more than seven years old, had a face full of
freckles, and was very persistent. He kept
tugging on my sleeve, but I was too busy to take
any notice.
I was
standing in the middle of Lee Records shop on
The Mall, Tralee, crouched beside a large
cardboard cut-out of Thomas the Tank Engine,
watching in fascination as a bizarre scene
unfolded before me.
Brian Harty
of the Events Committee of the Rose of Tralee
festival was standing behind the counter of the
shop, a wide grin on his face, waiting for the
onslaught. He gave the 'thumbs up' sign to shop
proprietor Brian Lee, to indicate he was ready.
And then the madness began.
To set the
scene more precisely, it was 4pm on the
afternoon of Thursday, August 10, and 5,000 free
tickets for the Rose of Tralee Westlife concert
on August 20, wereabout to be distributed on a
first-come, first-served basis at a number of
venues all over the county, including Lee
Records. The queues had begun as early as 6.30am
that morning.
The queue
outside Lee Records stretched all the way down
The Mall, as far as the main AIB office, and
snaked around the corner to stretch down Denny
Street as well.
A Garda had
to be called eventually, because regular
shoppers couldn't walk on the foot path. Brian
Lee allowed groups of ten in to the shop at the
time, and among the first to arrive were
Catherine O'Connell from Ballymacelligott and
her 15-year-old daughter, Joanne.
'We've
been queueing for the last four hours, just
standing there. But Joanne is a big Westlife
fan, she's mad into them, so I suppose it was
worth it,' said Catherine.
Kim
O'Sullivan from Causeway was clutching her
ticket like it was a piece of precious metal.
'I've
liked them since they first came out. They're
brilliant. It was worth the queue,'' she said.
Kim braved the long wait outside the door with
her friends Tracey Whyte and Adam Whyte, also
from Causeway.
Meanwhile a
drama was unfolding at the counter. 'What do you
mean I can only have one?'' asked a stroppy
teenage girl, who was definitely no more than
14. She then turned and declared to no-one in
particular: 'It's not fair! Old women can get
four tickets each!'
Mary Daly
from Listowel, age 14, queued with her mother
Margaret and managed to get five, because she
had an adult with her and each adult was
entitled to four and each child under 16 to one
each.
'Thank
God I got one. They were just running out of
them when I got to the counter. I love Westlife
and Shane is my favourite. I can't stand
Boyzone, they're eejits,' a giggling but clearly
delighted Mary told The Kerryman .
Poor Brian
Lee had the unfortunate task of having to go
back on to the street and tell a long line of
expectant teenyboppers and their irate mothers
that the tickets were gone. All 5,000 of them,
gone in less than half an hour.
Elaine Horgan
from Cahersiveen was one of the distraught
Westlife fans who didn't manage to get a ticket.
Neither did
her friend Nicole Kelliher fromManor, Tralee. A
third friend, Claire O'Sullivan also from Manor,
Traleedid get a ticket, but wasn't too keen on
going to the concert on her own.
Anne Marie
Foran from Causeway, who had queued in the heat
for two hours to get tickets for her daughters
Karen and Kiara, was understandably fed up.
'After
all that waiting, we got nothing,' she said.
``We're bitterly disappointed.''
Meanwhile,
the freckled young lad was at my side yet again,
his eyes gleaming with the brilliance of his
plan. He looked up at me and said: 'Will you
pretend to be my mammy and get me a ticket?'

WESTLIFE HIT BY EARTHQUAKE |
Westlife were nearly struck with disaster last
week when an earthquake that Kian described as
'absolutely terrifying' hit their Mexican hotel.
'I feel lucky to be alive,' Kian says. 'I was
first to wake up. It was like a really bad
dream. It felt like the hotel was spinning and
the sky was falling in. There was a loud rumble
like a huge thunderstorm.'
The boys were staying in a hotel in Mexico City
when the 'quake hit a nearby location, measuring
an immense 7.3 on the Richter scale. Fortunately
Westlife weren't at the centre of the action but
the danger was all too apparent to the
globe-trotting guys.
Kian continues: 'It was absolutely terrifying. I
didn't know what was happening. Everything
around me was falling off tables and the window
shattered into small pieces. I have never been
so frightened. It seemed to last for about five
minutes but I was told later it was only 60
seconds or so.'
Bryan from the band adds, 'It was like something
out of the Armageddon movie. It will be a story
to tell the grandchildren in future years.'
Westlife have been touring the America's
extensively in a bid to break the tough US
market. They release Against All Odds, a duet
with Mariah Carey, in the autumn and embark on
their debut headlining UK tour in the New Year.

BOYBAND GIVE MUMS A PRESENT TO
CHERISH |
Three
Sligo mothers celebrated the best Mother's Day
of their lives yesterday after news that their
sons had sung their way into the Guinness Book
of Records with their fifth number one hit
single!
Mae Filan, Patricia Egan and
Marie Feehily gathered in a Sligo Hotel
yesterday to toast the phenomenal success of
founder Westlife members Shane, Kian and Mark
following the news they had made it to the
coveted slot.
Westlife are the first band
in the world to have their first five singles go
straight into the charts at number one.
'Louis (Walsh) rang me at
around 12 o'clock today and I just could not
believe it. It was the best present any mother
could ever get,' said Shane's mom, Mae.
It was Mae who made that
fateful phonecall to Louis Walsh, asking him to
listen to the band, IOU which the Sligo
teenagers had founded.
Now, with Westlife on top of
the world, she says it was the best phonecall
she ever made!
And none of the three Sligo
popstars forgot their mothers yesterday with
each receiving deliveries of flowers and
chocolates to their doors!
`'The tears just ran down my
face when I answered the door. I am so proud I
do not know what to do with myself,' said a
delighted Patricia Egan, mother of Kian.
She believes Westlife's
phenomenal success has all been down to their
hard work.
Meanwhile tickets for
Westlife's first full concert in the Point
Theatre next March go on sale on Saturday at 8am
in music stores nationwide.

SHANE
INTERVIEW - 2000 |
|
Shane, you’re enjoying tremendous success at present and obviously
earning a lot of money. Do you intend splashing out on amazing
presents for people at Christmas?
That’s always a tricky one. Like the rest of the lads it is
something we’ve all thought about. If you spend a lot on a gift you
can be accused of being flash with your money and if you don’t? I’ll
buy some nice presents but really most of the money goes into the
bank for that rainy day.
Have you treated yourself to anything special?
Again, with the exception of Mark we’ve all bought cars. I got a BMW
but it is in a garage most of the time. The last thing you want to
do when you get home is to get behind the wheel of the car. We spend
so much time in cars as we travel all over the world.
How do you relax when you get a break from touring?
I go home to Sligo as often as I can and to chill out I go horse
riding. My family has a lot of horses and actually bought me on for
my birthday. Horse riding is my main life outside of music. It
always was. We have a lot of land so I can climb up on a horse and
gallop all over the place. You can really let your hair down.
You’re doing a lot of promotional work at present all over the
world. Do you enjoy that?
It is an amazing way of seeing the world. Of course it’s hard.
Anyone who travels a lot will tell you that, but it’s exciting,
visiting different countries and meeting fans in America, Korea,
Australia and Europe where we sell a lot of records.
How are you preparing for your forthcoming tour in which people
will be seeing you live for the first time?
So far we’ve had no time to rehearse but that will change after
Christmas when we go into rehearsals for some five weeks. We’re
doing 11 nights at the Point, which is a record, and one that we’re
very proud of. We thought we’d get maybe three nights, so it was
quite a shock when we learned that we had sold out so many concerts.
The same thing applied in Britain. When the tour was suggested we
thought it might run for about 20 dates. You can imagine our
surprise and shock when we were told we had filled 63 dates. We
haven’t done a live tour before, so it will be very exciting for us.
Some people have said that your concert will be boring, as all
you’ll be singing are ballads.
Yes, a lot of people are expecting that but they’d be wrong. There
will be quite a few up-tempo numbers in our act. A lot of money is
being spent on the set and we don’t want anyone to be bored at the
show. The audience will want to be lifted and have a great time. We
know that and intend to make it a night they’ll remember.
Are you still surprised at the amount of success you’ve achieved?
We’re all knocked out by it. It is absolutely brilliant to see all
your dreams come true so quickly. It really is the best life in the
world but we’re still shocked at how quickly it happened.
Your manager, Louis Walsh, said from the very beginning that you
were going to be bigger than Boyzone. Did you believe him?
I wouldn’t say we were bigger than Boyzone but certainly we’ve done
very well for ourselves. Maybe we got more success than we actually
deserve but I think we were in the right place at the right time.
You’re in competition with bands like the Spice Girls and
recently you beat them to the number one spot in the album charts.
Did you enjoy that?
Yes, it’s brilliant. It helps for great sales in England, which is a
great market for us. To go up against the likes of the Spice Girls
after only 18 months in the business gives a great feeling. They’re
superstars in their right. They’ve done some great things so it’s
amazing for us to be up there with them. I think the Backstreet Boys
on a world scale are the biggest boy band but it has taken them
eight years to achieve it so they’ve earned their success and worked
hard for it. That’s what we have to do now in the next couple of
years, to get America on board and sell a few million albums out
there. All we can do them is get bigger and bigger and that’s
exactly what we want to do, get bigger and bigger.
After seven number one hits in a row in the UK how much bigger
can you get?
We’re now looking for number eight. You can always get bigger just
as you can get smaller very quickly. You’re as good as your last hit
or your last concert. Truthfully, we never think our success very
much. It can go to your head very quickly. From day one Louis Walsh
taught us that when in Ireland just think of our Irish success, in
England the same and so on around the world. It’s much easier to
take in rather than thinking of worldwide success.
You have enjoyed a lot of record sales all over the world. Do you
know how many you’ve sold?
I think it’s about 8 million albums worldwide so far and about 3.5
million singles. Singles are very important to us in the UK. In the
first week of a single release we would expect to sell around
120,000 copies in Britain. We’re very proud of that and we like
putting Ireland on the map.
What do you mean?
Well, to follow on the success of Boyzone and, of courses U2. We’ll
never beat the like of U2, who are legends. You can’t compete with a
band like that. We’re just trying to add to something they’ve
started off. But if we’re going in 20 years, who knows?
Do you think you’ll still be around then?
Who knows? We honestly don’t know how it will go. If you get success
like we have then you have to work harder to hold on to it. If you
sit back it will all fall apart.
What about in five years time?
You think ahead but you don’t know what it’s going to be like in
five years time. I hope we’ll be together. No, we will be together.
We’re planning to do at least five albums together and we’ve only
done two. As a band we’d like to be still together and be very
successful. Hopefully, we’ll be big in America by then. If we’re not
then we’ll give up trying but I do think we’ll make it in the
States.
You all seem to get on well together.
We’re a tight band, genuinely close. If you’re fighting all the time
then there’s no point in being in a band. From day one we set out
certain rules and we’ve stuck by them. If there are any
disagreements then it’s decided by a majority vote and it really
works. When we disagree over something it’s a case of who voted for
this? Then it’s hands up and that’s it, over in two seconds.
However, if someone is really unhappy about something then we listen
seriously to what he has to say and probably don’t do it. But on
things we’re not sure about it simply goes to a vote.
You’re also together a lot?
A lot is an understatement. We’re together 24/7 apart from sleep.
Just think about it. When I wake up the rest of the lads are the
first people I see and the last people I see at night. We live in
each other’s pockets and living in hotels a lot doesn’t help. Yes,
it’s a hard life, but a very good life. |

AN EXCLUSIVE IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW
WITH SHANE FILAN |
|
"OK!" visited the talented lead singer of Irish
pop sensations Westlife at the beautiful Clontarf Castle in Dublin.
OK! : Shane, you celebrated your 21st birthday recently with a
huge party at Dublin's famous Lillies Bordello club. How was it?
It was a great night. Everyone looked so happy and that was the main
thing I wanted. Everybody I invited came too, so it was great to be
surrounded by my family and friends. Lillies is a great venue. it
has had loads of renovations and I've never seen it looking so great
- it's a beautiful club.
OK! : What did you do on your actual birthday?
We opened the Harrods summer sale in London during the day and then
we came home in the evening. I had dinner with my family and then I
went out with my friends at night time. Let's just say I had a
typical 21st - I had a pretty late night and paid the price for it
the next day! It was a brilliant birthday.
OK! : All of your family were with you at your celebration in
Dublin. Was it important for you to be surrounded by them?
Definately. My family are the most important thing in the world to
me, I've always said that. They've looked after me all my life and,
as the youngest of seven, I've grown up surrounded by people who
love me for who I am, not what I do.
OK! : So what presents did you get?
My mum and dad got me a horse and it was a complete surprise! I
didn't know what they were getting me because they kept saying, "We
don't know what to get you, it's hard now that you're in a big pop
band". I really wanted a horse, but I had a feeling that they
wouldn't get me one. We have a horse already, but it's getting old,
so when they gave it to me I couldn't believe it. It's an amazing
looking horse, beautiful.
OK! : What have you called him?
We're thinking of Carlton Clover, as my family own a restaurant
called Carlton's and we fancied naming the horse after it. We used
to own a horse called Nalif, whic is Filan spelt backwards.
OK! : The last year was incredibly successful - five number ones
and record of the year. Did you have any idea Westlife would be so
huge?
I don't think any of us expected the success we have. We've broken
the UK now and hopefully we can go further afield with the same
success. America is our next big challenge. A lot of bands have done
well in the UK, but not in the States, it just wasn't the right
time. But now, especially with the Backstreet Boys, there's a
chance. The Spice Girls did it because it proved it was a perfect
time for them and we're hoping it's a perfect time for us.
OK! : Looking back over the past year, what do you feel have been
the highest points?
Winning Record Of The Year was the biggest moment. I remember when
the 28,000 votes came in, I jumped up and ripped my shirt open. I
looked down and thought, what have I done? But I was just so happy.
It was a funny night, emotional, but funny.
OK! : You're only 21, but you're experiencing things that even
people twice your age would have trouble dealing with. How do you
cope?
Well, after a while, you realise you need your space. It's not
healthy, you need to get some private space. I love horse riding,
it's a great way to relax. Just going home is great. My family own a
cafe, which I've lived over all my life and it's in the dead centre
of the city in Sligo. It's nice to do normal things with them.
OK! : What can your fans look forward to?
We'll be releasing three more singles here in the UK, one with
Mariah Carey in August, another one in October and then a Christmas
single. We're all excited about the Mariah single - Mark's a huge
fan of her's, so getting to work with her in the flesh was great for
him. |

WESTLIFE
PARTY WITH THE BACKSTREET BOYS... |
|
Pop rivals
Westlife and Backstreet Boys have
been partying in Stockholm's most exclusive
VIP night clubs running up a whopping
£30,000 bar bill. The millionaire
heartthrobs ran up the huge bill after a
champagne-fuelled night on the town
together.
Westlife were in
the Swedish capital to record songs for
their new album while American superstars
the Backstreet Boys flew in to film a TV
show. The pop powers are worth a combined
total of £70 million partied the night away
in the exclusive Bondai Cafe and
Bar Opera.
They were
followed by a huge entourage of minders and
close friends who enjoyed the champagne
treatment in the exclusive VIP lounges.
Limousines whisked them between the top
clubs and they finally returned to their
luxury hotels at 2am.
Last night
Westlife star Nicky Byrne told the
Irish Mirror: "It was a great night for
us, we went to all the top clubs and really
let out hair down. As soon as we realised
that the Backstreet Boys were in town we got
in touch and headed out with them. There was
a big bar bill at the end of the night - but
it was the last chance to really chill out
before the serious work begins. We headed
out in a couple of limousines and the
champagne was flowing early on. People may
think that Westlife and the Backstreet Boys
hate each other but it simply isn't true. By
the time we hit the first bar there were a
lot of fans gathering outside. We had to
increase the security to make sure it didn't
get out of hand."
The Sligo and
Dublin boys were granted permission by
record company bosses for a last night on
the town before their two month recording
schedule begins.
The following
day the two groups were handed the huge bar
bill to split between them. "We didn't mind
the big cost of the night because it was a
celebration for everyone to join in,"
Kian Egan said. "We've had a great year
and had five number one hits. It was the
first time that we'd been out with the lads
from the Backstreet Boys and they had a lot
to celebrate too. The party is over for us
now though. We're going to be in Sweden for
two months then it's off to America for more
promotions. Our world tour starts at the
beginning of 2001 so we're not anticipating
even being back home for a long time yet." |

WESTLIFE TO MEET THE POPE |
|
Westlife are hoping to get the Pope dancing when
they sing for him later in December.
The Irish heart-throbs have been invited to give
a private performance to Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.
The boys said performing for him would be the
"ultimate honour".
'Our parents are so proud'
Staff at the Vatican, where the Pope lives,
invited Westlife to sing for him when the Pope admitted he was a fan
of the boyband.
Nicky from Westlife told Smash Hits: "We are
incredibly honoured to be performing in front of the Pope. Our
parents are so proud.
'Don't know the words'
"For an Irish band this really is the ultimate
honour because it's a holy country. We're going to sing Queen of My
Heart and Little Drummer Boy because that's what the Vatican wanted
- the only problem is that I don't know the words."
Kian added: "We hope our music will get him on to
his feet dancing. That would be
funny."

WESTLIFE
GETS SIX OF
THE BEST AT POP AWARDS |
POP group
Westlife rounded off a record-breaking year by
yesterday taking six titles at one of pop's
biggest award shows, including the prize 'Best
Band on Planet Pop'.
The group, which last night
won the Record of the Year 2000 Award for the
single My Love, was presented with the titles in
front of thousands of screaming fans at the
Smash Hits Poll Winners Party at London Arena.
But the Spice Girls followed
its album flop Forever by picking up four of the
most dubious honours, including worst group.
The group got the worst
single award for Holler and worst album for
Forever, while Mel C was named most tragic
haircut. Westlife, which this year became the
first band to have its first seven singles go to
number one, also picked up best non-British band
and best album for its first release, Westlife.
In addition, singers Kian
Egan and Shane Filan picked up prizes in their
own right Filan being named most fancied male
and Egan picking up best haircut. The band could
have more riches to come this month as it is
tipped to take the Christmas number one.
Other winners at the ceremony
included the band's former joint manager Ronan
Keating, who was named best-dressed male and
best male solo star. Liam Gallagher was named
'Sad Loser of the Year'.

WESTLIFE
MAKES POP-CHART HISTORY |
|
Irish boy band Westlife made pop history today by becoming the first
group in the UK to see their first five singles enter the charts at
number one. As Fool Again hit the top of the charts, the quintet
earned record-breaking status and an entry in the Guinness Book of
Records.
The band, currently in New York promoting their debut single Swear
It Again, were planning to celebrate the news by cracking open a
bottle of champagne. Band member Kian Egan is reported to have said
the band's latest chart success is a dream come true.
The battle for the top slot was very close fought
with Westlife losing their midweek lead over current number one Mel
C by Friday - but Saturday sales figures tipped the balance and the
band came out on top by a narrow margin of around 1,400 singles.
Westlife's track was the fifth single on their album, so many fans
already had a copy and the band struggled to keep strong sales up
through the week.
Boyzone singer Ronan Keating, who is co-manager of Westlife, has
helped the group achieve success far more quickly than his own Irish
boy band. Although Boyzone has so far attained six number one
singles, these were spread over a longer period of six years.
Boyzone's 1994 debut single Love Me For A Reason only went to number
two and it was not until 1996 that the band achieved their first
number one with Words.
Last year fellow Irish stars B Witched set a new
record by becoming the first group to have each of their first four
singles go straight to number one. Their chart-topping success has
since tailed off with the releases from their second album. While,
the Spice Girls made number one with their first five singles, but
they did not all enter the charts at the top. First single Wannabe
made it to number two in its first week, climbing a place a week
later.
After their four-week tour in New York, Westlife
will perform further concerts across Asia and another six-week stint
in the US.

THE BEST LIFE FOR WESTLIFE |
|
WESTLIFE are set to secure their place as Britain’s top boy band
when they hit No1 AGAIN on Sunday.
The five lads have already
clocked up eight chart-topping hits since bursting on to the scene
in 1999.
And their new double A-side
Queen Of My Heart/When You’re Looking Like That is firmly on track
to add to their tally after amazing sales.
But how has wealth and fame
transformed the lives of Irish hunks Shane Filan, Mark Feehily,
Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan and Bryan McFadden?
On the next five pages they
talk exclusively about being in the limelight, where their careers
are heading, what it’s like to be a real pop idol and how Bryan’s
baby Molly has changed their outlook on life. >>>

Shane
SHANE is the group’s heart-throb and he gave me the news that will
disappoint millions of Westlife fans – he believes his latest love
is the girl of his dreams.
Shane, 22, first met student Gillian Walsh – band mate Kian’s cousin
– when the pair were just 12 and it was puppy love at first sight.
Then, nine years later, they fell for each other again and Shane
reckons Gillian may be Mrs Right.
He
says: “I was frustrated for a couple of years, not being able to
find the right woman but this feels good.
“It couldn’t be better. Gillian is very beautiful and it helps that
I have known her most of my life.
“I
wasn’t concerned about how it would affect the fans – and I was
proved right because they’ve been very supportive and happy for me.
“We aren’t living together or anything and in some ways I am envious
of what Bryan’s got with his baby Molly. She is beautiful but we did
wonder how the fans would react to the news that he was to be a dad.
“Molly fell asleep on my chest the other day and it was one of the
most beautiful moments of my life.
“She has brought the band closer together rather than dividing us.”
Despite the boys being stronger than ever, Shane said he would split
from Westlife if he caught any of the others doing drugs.
He
says: “We are normal lads and we like a beer and a laugh but we’re
not heroin addicts. None of us is into drugs and I’ve never really
come across them.
“I
would be extremely disappointed if someone in the band became a drug
user – and if they did I don’t think they could continue in the
group.
“We were taught from day one not to get into that scene. I’d never
put my career on the line for something like that.”
Nicky
NICKY looks like being the second Westlife pin-up to break millions
of young girls hearts by getting married.
He
tells me he is planning to propose to beautiful Georgina Ahern,
daughter of Irish political leader Bertie.
But he won’t be pinned down on exactly when he is going to follow
bandmate Bryan and his ex-Atomic Kitten lover Kerry Katona up the
aisle.
Nicky, 23, says: “Me and Georgina have been together for seven years
and we have talked about getting married – I very much want to.
“We’ve bought a house together in the suburbs of Dublin and I want
to do something really special. I’m just trying to come up with the
right idea on how to propose.
“Now I’ve seen Bryan’s daughter I know I want children. I’ve held
her and fed her and she’s changed all our lives.
“If it happened to us it would be brilliant – but maybe not just
yet.”
So
it seems like the wild times are over. And the lads do like a wild
time, something that Nicky thinks is overlooked.
He
says: “It’s frustrating sometimes because people see us as a
stereotypical boy band but we’re not.
“I
think people perceive us as really clean-cut guys but we’re more
laddish than that. We’re like a football team. And yes, we did go to
a lap-dancing bar for Bryan’s stag night.
“People seem to be shocked by that but we’re just like any other
young blokes.”
And in a message to gladden the hearts of Westlife’s followers,
Nicky reckons the band still have a lot of years left in them.
He
says: “If you don’t like us, then I’m sorry but we’re not going
anywhere.
“We want to go out at the top, not just fade away like the Spice
Girls or Boyzone. We’ve
got America to break yet.”
Kian
KIAN may be a pop idol but he hates the telly show of the same name
— even though his boss Simon Cowell is one of the judges.
Kian, 21, attacked ITV’s search for a star as “nasty and demeaning”
and blasted the cruel put-downs of Cowell and fellow judge Pete
Waterman.
Cowell is credited with signing Westlife to his label BMG but Kian
didn’t pull any punches when he told me: “I think Pop Idol ruins the
illusion of the whole pop industry.
After watching the show I wonder why anyone would want to be in the
industry.
“I
think that’s wrong and I don’t think the judges should be so nasty.
“There have been some brilliant singers on there but they have been
destroyed. The big guy they featured would be excellent in something
such as the film The Commitments.
“I
think it devalues and demeans what I do and the music industry in
general by showing the nasty side.”
Closer to home Kian, the self-styled business brain behind the band,
admits he was worried about Westlife’s future when Bryan’s daughter
was born.
He
reveals: “When I found out Bryan was going to be a dad I was
concerned about how it would affect the band.
"But Molly has made me realise there is a lot more to life than
Westlife.”
The boys now have America in their sights again after a false start
there.
Kian says: “We feel we have our foot in the door. When we went there
before nothing was organised for us but I am convinced we can crack
it.”
You can see why Kian is the money man in the group. As we leave the
north London hotel where we met, he chats up the manageress and
tries to negotiate a discount for a suite.
Bandmate Nicky says: “We call him Scrooge. He’s the tightest man in
pop.”
Mark
MARK reckons he has had enough of groupies — though he tried a few
before he came to his decision.
He
admits he’s bedded dozens of young fans turned on by his fame in
Britain’s No1 boy band.
Mark, 21, won’t be specific about how many girls he’s slept with but
says: “It isn’t as many as 100 but there have been quite a few.
“I
find it very shallow and I’m disillusioned by the whole thing.”
Explaining how his, er, interest started, he explained: “I’m just a
country lad from Sligo in Ireland.
“It’s weird when some beautiful, busty blonde wanders over and chats
you up.
“I
don’t think I have been abusing my position because the girls know
what they are letting themselves in for — and there have been a lot
of one night stands.
“But I feel a bit s----y about it afterwards — it’s an empty
experience and not genuine.
“I’m single at the moment and I’ve got a bit sick of going out and
pulling birds — but I’m still doing it at every opportunity.
“Deep down I would like to find something a bit more special.”
Mark admits he’s a millionaire — on paper at least — but says he
gets into situations where he feels uncomfortable with his wealth.
He
says: “It really does frighten me in a way — and there is a guilt
thing attached to it.
“If I’m in a pub or at a till in a shop, I feel embarrassed to pull
out a wad of cash.
“It’s as if people will see me and think that I’m showing off and
flaunting my wealth.
“I’ll often crouch over so nobody can see what I’m doing.”
Bryan
BRYAN admits he and fiancée Kerry Katona were terrified at the
thought of having a baby.
They were worried about how it would affect their careers and how
they would cope with parenthood.
But Bryan reckons the day Molly was born was the greatest of his
life.
The 21-year-old says: “At first we didn’t know whether to be happy
or sad. We were delighted but nervous about what it was going to do
to our careers and whether we were too young to have a baby.
“But it has been just brilliant. It has made me. And it has worked
out really well with the rest of the band — it feels like we are
more of a family now.
“The others look on Molly, who is now two months, like they are her
uncles. They feel responsible for her.
“Molly and Kerry will come on tour with me so it will not have any
impact on Westlife and I’m happier than I have ever been.”
Bryan and ex Atomic Kitten Kerry plan to get married in front of 300
family and friends on January 5 next year at Slane Castle in Dublin.
But despite having two wedding planners, he is still feeling
stressed about the big day.
Bryan says: “There is just so much to do, so much to organise
because we want it to be extra special.
“Kerry will have five bridesmaids and Natasha Hamilton from Atomic
Kitten will be one of them. Shane is the only member of the band to
be one of my groomsmen — he is one of five — as we are the closest
in the group.
"My friend Eddie is going to be my best man. I can’t tell you much
more about it but it will have a very Christmassy feel.”
On
the career front, Bryan admits that recently has probably been
Westlife’s most difficult time as they struggled to break the US.
And unlike his pals, he says he will not be bothered if the band
give up on America.
He
insists: “It was like going from the Premiership to struggling in
the Third Division. I don’t want to be part of that again. We were
used to playing in massive stadiums and they had us playing off the
back of a lorry in a car park.
“It was too hard. We were struggling against too much prejudice. It
really is not worth the trouble.
“We are one of the biggest bands in the rest of the world and that
is enough for me.”
Westlife’s failure to break America has been softened by early sales
figures which show their new single is set to be No1 on Sunday.
Bryan says: “After America everyone was feeling a bit downbeat and
we were all thinking we would do one greatest hits album and that
would be it for Westlife.
“But when we heard the news about the single everyone was thrilled.
Now we’re thinking at least four or five more albums.
“We’re thinking we could go on for ever.” |

AGAINST ALL ODDS VIDEO SHOOT
WESTLIFE'S WORST EXPERIENCE |
|
- a bit of background info that might be unknown for some of you
The official response to the cover song "Against all odds (take a
look at me now)" had been positive, and in September 2000 it was
released as a single in the UK and some other countries. The solo
version was already a couple of months earlier in a few countries,
but this time Mariah had a more progressive idea. She was a fan of
the up-and-coming Irish pop group Westlife and felt redoing the tune
with them would give the song a real commercial edge.
The group was thrilled with the opportunity, and a rehearsal session
was set up in a studio in Ireland. On the surface, the session went
quite smoothly and everybody was happy with the song and the
resultant video. With the help of an engineer, Mariah produced the
session herself. The members of Westlife recalled that they had a
huge case of nerves on the day they arrived to record the song, so
much so that the band decided to have a drink to settle themselves
before the session, and they adjourned to the hotel bar. On the day
in question, the members of Westlife were sitting in the bar downing
drinks when who should walk in but Mariah herself. The singer
promptly joined the group, and according to Westlife Bryan McFadden,
"We had a few drinks and everybody relaxed. Mariah even got a bit
tipsy."
But the good-time nature of the session changed
according to a Mariah Carey interview with MTV Asia not long after
the session was completed. "The whole thing wasn't a drama or
anything, but even though they're just starting out, they can get a
little egotistical." Westlife shot back with charges that the
"Against all odds" video shoot was the worst experience the band had
ever had. The resulting video had to be reedited when it was
discovered that band member Bryan McFadden was paying a bit too much
attention to Mariah's cleavage. Mariah was disappointed at the
back-biting in the aftermath of the session but insisted that the
resulting song was great and would most certainly be a hit. And
Mariah was right, "Against all odds" entered the UK chart at number
1.
Simon Cowell remembers when the tape was sent to
him. "I played it and I was absolutely horrifed. It was terrible. I
phoned her record company in London to tell them that I wasn't
putting the record out. They fought, but I held my ground. Finally,
they asked whether I would tell Mariah myself, and I said that I
would be happy to. That's why I had to fly to Canada to meet her
and, in the midst of her 'yes' brigade, tell her that I thought the
production was horrendous and needed to be changed before the record
could be released. When I said as much, there was a deadly silence;
it was as if I had spit on the Queen in court. But I couldn't care
less. I just wanted a hit. In the end, we did change the record, and
it went to number one."
